The PICO Single Use Negative Pressure Wound Therapy System by Smith & Nephew is a breakthrough in negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). The PICO System delivers the same level of effective negative pressure as traditional systems – in a canister-free, pocket-sized device. The revolutionary technology of the dressing allows the PICO System to be canister-free and disposable. This, in turn, enables NPWT to be an option for a wider range of patients in all care settings. The easy to use PICO System expands the options for applying NPWT to many wound conditions, as well as closed surgical incisions. PICO is appropriate for:
PICO consists of an NPWT pump connected to an absorbent gentle adhesive dressing. The dressing is applied to the wound bed and extra adhesive strips are placed over the outside edge to help hold the dressing in place. When the pump is turned on, air is pulled out of the dressing and excess fluid from the wound will start to enter the dressing. The dressing helps to prevent bacteria from entering the wound and it also improves blood flow which will help the wound to heal. The dressing may be left in place for up to seven days depending on the type of wound and amount of fluid from the wound. The pump is designed to stop working seven days after initial start. After this time, it will stop and will not restart even with new batteries. Negative pressure therapy is not being applied at this point so a new PICO therapy system will need to be applied if additional therapy is required. Effective and affordable The PICO System offers all the effectiveness of traditional NPWT for wounds with low to moderate exudate and it may also significantly reduce costs.1,2
