Take These Extra Steps to Avoid Diabetes Complications

Diabetes, when not managed properly, can cause a number of serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, nerve damage and circulation problems that can lead to amputation. In addition to tracking your glucose levels, making healthy food choices, getting plenty of exercise and tracking your diabetes care plan, there are other actions that can help you live a healthy life.

The National Institute on Aging recommends taking the following steps to protect against additional complications that can be caused by diabetes1:
  • Schedule yearly eye exams to check for diabetes-related eye problems

  • Diabetes can affect the kidneys, so urine and blood tests that check kidney function are a good idea

  • Flu shots and the pneumonia vaccine will help keep you healthy

  • Have your cholesterol and triglyceride levels checked via a blood test at least once a year

  • Keep teeth and gum problems at bay by having them checked by a dentist twice a year

  • Protect your skin by keeping it clean and moisturized and tend to cuts and bruises immediately to prevent infections

  • Inspect your feet every day for red patches and call a podiatrist if you notice any sores, breaks in the skin, infections or callus build-up

  • Have your blood pressure checked on a regular basis
