How Often Do Your Gloves Fail?

We count on disposable gloves to protect us from everything from bodily fluids to everyday messes – but could your gloves be failing you when it matters most? No disposable glove is completely resistant to tearing, but some fare better than others.

Nitrile

2%

It's also important to understand how a glove's failure rate plays into the true cost of the product. Let's say that your facility is paying $31 for a case of gloves that fail 10 percent of the time. That means that $3.10 per case is wasted on unusable gloves. This number can amount to thousands of dollars wasted per year on gloves alone!

Of course, these numbers don't tell the whole story. For example, while latex gloves fail less often than stretch vinyl gloves, the use of latex gloves is associated with latex allergy, which can be a costly problem to address.

As you can see, choosing the best gloves for use at your facility requires taking a lot of factors into consideration. Your ProMed territory manager would be happy to help you determine which gloves are the best fit for your facility.

CMS Emphasizes Need for Supervision of Smoking Residents

CMS has released a memo to all state survey agency directors that re-emphasizes the need to adequately supervise residents who smoke. The memo, titled "Alert: Smoking Safety in Long Term Care Facilities," reminds facilities of the following obligations:

Facilities must include assessment of smoking areas and provision of emergency equipment in the designated smoking areas. Facilities should also document the means by which individual residents are assessed as safe to smoke without supervision.

The memo was drafted in the wake of the agency being alerted to an incident in which a resident died after accidentally setting her clothing on fire while smoking.
